Best Digital Banks in the UAE: Compare Accounts & Rates [2026]
A digital bank is a bank that lets you open and manage your account mainly through an app or online, without needing to visit a branch for most day-to-day banking. You can typically receive your salary, save money, make transfers, pay bills and manage your cards from your phone. In the UAE, digital banking includes both standalone banks such as Wio, Mbank and ruya, and digital banking brands such as Liv and Mashreq NEO that sit under established banks.
Digital banking has become a major part of the UAE banking system. According to the CBUAE’s Q1 2026 data, UAE banks held AED 5.56 trillion in assets, up 17.7% year on year. Digital payments are growing alongside them. By April 2026, the CBUAE reported that Aani had passed 12.5 million registered users, with 74 financial institutions connected and account-to-account transfers completing in around three seconds.
The choice has also become much wider. Wio offers everyday banking, savings, foreign currencies and investing in one app. Mbank focuses on zero-balance banking, while ruya offers Shariah-compliant digital banking. Mashreq NEO and Liv provide app-first banking through Mashreq and Emirates NBD respectively.
For personal banking, the main digital options to compare in 2026 are Wio, Mashreq NEO, ruya, Mbank and Liv. This guide looks at their savings rates, account fees, minimum-balance rules, salary requirements, transfers and key features to help you work out which digital bank fits how you use your money.
Best digital banks in the UAE at a glance
| Digital bank / brand | Best for | Savings rate to know | Main condition | Licence position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wio Personal | Best overall | Up to 6% p.a. on qualifying one-month Fixed Saving Spaces | Salary or qualifying Family plan plus AED 5,000 monthly spend for the 6% rate | CBUAE-licensed bank |
| Mashreq NEO / NEO PLUS | Best for high-interest savings | 6.25% p.a. with qualifying salary transfer; 5% p.a. without salary | AED 10,000+ salary for 6.25%; AED 50,000 monthly average balance for 5% | Digital proposition of Mashreq |
| ruya | Best Islamic digital bank | Expected profit rather than a fixed conventional interest rate | No minimum balance or salary requirement on standard personal accounts | CBUAE-licensed Islamic specialised bank |
| Mbank | Best for zero-balance everyday banking | Savings account earns interest; no comparable headline rate is prominently published | No minimum balance on its marketed Current/Saving accounts | CBUAE-licensed specialised bank |
| Liv | Best for Emirates NBD's digital ecosystem | Ongoing Goal Account rate up to 4% p.a. with Max + salary; separate promotion can pay up to 6% p.a. for six months | Max subscription and/or salary conditions; promotional rules differ | Digital brand of Emirates NBD |
The headline percentages are not directly comparable without their conditions. Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver pays 6.25% p.a. when at least AED 10,000 of salary is transferred, but interest is limited to qualifying balances up to AED 500,000 and more than two debit transactions in a month can result in no interest for that month.
Wio's 6% p.a. applies to a qualifying one-month Fixed Saving Space under its Salary or eligible Family plan and requires at least AED 5,000 of monthly spend.
Liv's ongoing Goal Account table is lower, but it currently also runs a separate six-month salary-transfer promotion for eligible new or returning salary customers.

What is a digital bank?
A digital bank delivers everyday banking, such as current accounts, savings, cards and transfers, primarily or entirely through an app, without a branch network behind it for day-to-day service.
In the UAE that covers two different setups:
- banks built digital-first that hold their own CBUAE licence, and
- digital-only brands that operate inside an existing bank's licence rather than holding one of their own.
What counts as a digital bank in the UAE?
The term digital bank is used loosely. For a useful comparison, separate the market into three groups.
Fully licensed banks with a digital-first or community-bank model
These institutions hold their own CBUAE bank licences:
| Bank | CBUAE classification |
|---|---|
| Al Maryah Community Bank (Mbank) | National conventional specialised bank |
| Wio Bank | National conventional retail bank |
| Zand Bank | National conventional retail bank |
| ruya Community Islamic Bank | National Islamic specialised bank |
| Reem Community Bank | National conventional specialised bank |
These classifications come from the CBUAE's May 2026 bank register.
Digital banking brands run by traditional banks
Some of the UAE's best-known digital banking names sit inside an existing bank rather than holding a separate licence.
| Brand | Parent bank | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| Liv | Emirates NBD | Personal banking |
| Mashreq NEO / NEO PLUS | Mashreq | Personal banking |
| E20 | Emirates NBD | SME and business banking |
| ADIB Amwali | Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank | Shariah-compliant banking for children and teenagers |
For example, Liv's own website states that Liv is a brand owned by Emirates NBD, while Emirates NBD Bank P.J.S.C. holds the banking licence.
Payment apps and wallets are not automatically banks
Careem Pay, e& money, Botim, Ziina and other payment products can be useful for transfers, remittances, cards and merchant payments, but they should not automatically be compared with a deposit-taking bank.
The CBUAE separately regulates activities such as stored-value facilities and payment services. Under the UAE's current banking law, taking deposits is a licensed financial activity, so the legal entity and licence behind an app matter more than whether the interface looks like mobile banking.
Wio Personal — best digital bank overall
What is Wio Personal?
Wio Personal is the personal banking service of Wio Bank P.J.S.C., which the CBUAE lists as a national conventional retail bank. Unlike Liv or Mashreq NEO, Wio holds its own banking licence.
The account is opened and managed through the Wio app. Wio combines a current account, savings, salary banking, cards, foreign currencies, transfers, credit and investing in one place.
What does Wio offer?
Wio Personal covers more than a basic current account. Its main features include:
- AED and foreign-currency banking in USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, CAD and CHF
- Saving Spaces for money you want to keep accessible
- Fixed Saving Spaces for one, three, six or 12 months
- salary transfer
- debit and credit spending through the Wio Card
- international transfers to more than 100 countries
- access to 3,000+ US and UAE stocks, ETFs and fractional shares
- managed investment portfolios
- personal loans for eligible customers
- up to 2% cashback on qualifying credit-card spending
Wio says investing can start from US$1, while its card can be switched between debit and credit in the app.
Wio savings rates
Wio offers both flexible Saving Spaces and Fixed Saving Spaces.
| Wio savings option | Rate |
|---|---|
| Flexible AED Saving Space on Standard plan | 3.00% p.a. |
| Flexible USD Saving Space on Standard plan | 2.75% p.a. |
| Standard-plan Fixed Saving Space, 1 month | 3.25% p.a. |
| Standard-plan Fixed Saving Space, 3 months | 3.25% p.a. |
| Standard-plan Fixed Saving Space, 6 months | 3.25% p.a. |
| Standard-plan Fixed Saving Space, 12 months | 3.25% p.a. |
| Salary / qualifying Family Plan, one-month Fixed Saving Space | 6.00% p.a. |
The standard Wio Saving Space has no minimum amount and no lock-in, while Fixed Saving Spaces require you to choose a term. Early or partial closure fees can apply to fixed savings.
The 6% p.a. rate is not a standard savings rate. It applies to a one-month Fixed Saving Space on the Salary Plan or a qualifying Family Plan where a Family Lead transfers salary, and requires at least AED 5,000 of monthly spending.
Wio Salary Plan
The Wio Salary Plan is free when you transfer a qualifying salary.
You need:
- a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000, or AED 5,000 if you work for an eligible partner company
- to transfer your salary within two months
- at least AED 5,000 monthly spend to receive the 6% p.a. rate on a qualifying one-month Fixed Saving Space
Salary Plan customers also receive 3.25% p.a. on flexible Saving Spaces, with no minimum deposit, alongside access to Wio’s other Salary Plan benefits.
Best for: people who want their everyday account, savings, foreign currencies, cards and investments in the same banking app.
Mashreq NEO — best for high-interest savings
What is Mashreq NEO?
Mashreq NEO is the digital banking service of Mashreq Bank P.S.C. It is not a separately licensed bank. The CBUAE lists Mashreq as a national conventional retail bank, with NEO operating as its branchless personal banking service.
What does Mashreq NEO offer?
The Mashreq NEO Current Account can be opened through the Mashreq app with a valid Emirates ID.
Its banking features include:
- current and savings accounts
- debit card
- salary transfer
- international remittances through Quick Remit
- foreign-currency accounts
- access to global stock markets
- gold and foreign-currency trading
- term deposits
- Mashreq ATM access
Mashreq also supports foreign-currency accounts in currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD, JPY and SAR.
For its standard NEO Current Account, Mashreq currently lists a minimum monthly income of AED 5,000, a valid Emirates ID and a minimum age of 18.
Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver
The main savings product to compare is the NEO PLUS Saver Account.
| NEO PLUS Saver | Requirement | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Salary-transfer rate | AED 10,000+ salary | 6.25% p.a. |
| Non-salary rate | AED 50,000+ monthly average balance | 5.00% p.a. |
The 6.25% p.a. rate applies when at least AED 10,000 of salary is transferred to Mashreq. If you do not transfer salary, the account pays 5% p.a. when you maintain at least AED 50,000 monthly average balance.
Interest is calculated on balances of up to AED 500,000. Any amount above AED 500,000 in the NEO PLUS Saver Account does not earn interest.
The two-withdrawal rule
NEO PLUS Saver is designed more for saving than daily spending.
You can make up to two debit transactions per month without affecting the interest payment. If you make more than two, you lose the interest for that month. The account also does not come with its own debit card and does not support standing instructions or automatic debits.
There is no monthly fee or fall-below fee on the NEO PLUS Saver Account itself, although you need an active Mashreq NEO account before you can open it.
Best for: people who can transfer at least AED 10,000 of salary or keep AED 50,000 or more in savings without making frequent withdrawals.
ruya — best Islamic digital bank in the UAE
What is ruya?
ruya, formally Ruya Community Islamic Bank L.L.C., is a fully licensed Islamic bank rather than an Islamic product offered by a conventional bank. The CBUAE classifies ruya as a national Islamic specialised bank.
Its banking products are Shariah-compliant and are opened and managed through the ruya app.
What does ruya offer?
ruya Personal Banking includes:
- current account
- savings account
- kids savings account
- Wakala Investment Deposits
- Mudaraba Term Deposits
- debit cards
- salary banking
- Shariah-compliant personal finance
- local transfers and bill payments
- international remittances
- digital cheque deposits
- contactless payments
International remittances are currently available to markets including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Nepal, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Philippines.
ruya Current Account
The ruya Current Account has:
- no minimum opening deposit
- no minimum balance
- no salary requirement
- free debit card
- cheque book
- UAE Pass account opening
The account is available from age 18.
ruya Savings Account
The ruya Savings Account does not pay conventional interest. It is a Shariah-compliant profit-generating account where expected profits are linked to the bank’s underlying investments and shared with account holders.
There is no minimum balance or salary requirement, but you need an active ruya Current Account before opening the Savings Account.
I would not quote a current savings profit percentage here because ruya does not publish one fixed current rate on its Savings Account page.
ruya Investment Deposits
ruya also offers a Wakala Investment Deposit from AED 5,000 to AED 5 million, with one-, three-, six- and 12-month terms.
The page currently displays expected profit rates of up to 3.75% p.a., but these are explicitly labelled “as of Q3 2025”. They should therefore not be presented as August 2026 rates unless ruya updates them.
ruya Standard vs Max
According to ruya’s April 2026 fee schedule, the Standard plan is free.
The optional Max plan costs AED 40 per month, or is free if you meet either of these conditions:
- transfer at least AED 20,000 salary per month, or
- maintain at least AED 10,000 average balance
This does not change the zero-balance rule on the underlying standard Current and Savings Accounts.
Best for: people looking specifically for app-based Islamic banking with no minimum balance or salary requirement on the standard account.
Mbank — best zero-balance digital bank account
What is Mbank?
Mbank is the consumer brand of Al Maryah Community Bank L.L.C. The CBUAE classifies Al Maryah Community Bank as a national conventional specialised bank.
Accounts are opened through the Mbank UAE app using UAE Pass, and Mbank says the application can be completed in around five minutes.
What does Mbank offer?
Mbank’s personal banking range includes:
- Current Account
- Savings Account
- Joint Account
- Banky Account
- fixed deposits
- Jaywan debit card
- personal loans
- Ziyada overdraft
- Aani instant payments
- utility payments
- Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay
- ATM cash deposits and withdrawals
Mbank also has business accounts, payroll services and accounts for children.
Mbank Current and Savings Accounts
The Mbank Current / Saving Account page states that there is no minimum balance required to open an account.
Mbank’s legal terms provide more detail:
- Current Account: income of at least AED 3,000 per month; no minimum opening deposit or ongoing minimum balance
- Smart Account: income below AED 3,000 per month; no minimum opening deposit or ongoing minimum balance
- Savings Account: no minimum opening deposit or ongoing minimum balance
This is why I would remove the earlier blanket statement that Mbank has “no minimum salary”. The zero-balance claim is correct, but the exact account you receive can depend on income.
Mbank Banky
Banky is Mbank’s separate everyday account for customers who typically keep up to AED 20,000 in the account.
It includes:
- no minimum balance
- instant IBAN
- salary receipt
- local payments
- international remittance through partners
- Jaywan debit card
- spending and budgeting tools through Nama’a
Banky has no monthly or annual fee under its current fee schedule. Cash deposits through Mbank ATMs or approved agents are also free, while cash withdrawals from non-Mbank ATMs cost AED 2 before VAT.
Mbank fixed deposits
Mbank Fixed Deposits require at least AED 5,000, an existing Mbank Current or Savings Account, and are available from 30 days up to five years.
I would not insert a headline savings or fixed-deposit rate unless Mbank publishes a current rate that can be clearly dated.
Best for: people who want an account without an ongoing minimum-balance requirement, particularly if earning the highest savings rate is not the main priority.
Liv — best for Emirates NBD customers
What is Liv?
Liv is the digital banking brand of Emirates NBD, not a separately licensed bank. Liv states on its own website that Emirates NBD Bank P.J.S.C. is licensed by the CBUAE and Liv is a brand owned by Emirates NBD.
Liv is managed through the Liv X app and uses Emirates NBD’s banking infrastructure, including its ATM network.
What does Liv offer?
Liv now covers considerably more than its original current account. Products available through Liv include:
- Primary Account
- Goal savings accounts
- Instant Interest Fixed Deposits
- multicurrency accounts
- debit and credit cards
- personal loans
- local and international transfers
- gold and silver accounts
- UAE equities
- insurance
- crypto services
Liv Max adds higher savings rates, free transfers and other account benefits for a monthly subscription.
Liv Primary Account fees
The Liv Primary Account costs AED 25 per month before VAT unless you meet at least one fee-waiver condition.
The fee is waived if you:
- transfer at least AED 5,000 salary per month
- spend at least AED 2,500 per month with your Liv debit card
- hold an active Liv credit card
- maintain at least AED 3,000 monthly average balance across your Primary and Goal Accounts
- qualify for Liv’s student exemption for customers aged up to 24 with proof
The first Liv debit card and cash withdrawals from Emirates NBD ATMs are free. (liv.me)
Liv Max
Liv Max costs AED 39 per month, or is free when you maintain at least AED 30,000 per month in qualifying balances.
Max is mainly relevant because it increases the interest paid on Goal Accounts and fixed deposits.
Liv Goal Account interest rates
The current Liv interest-rate table shows:
| Goal Account | Up to AED 500,000 | Balance above AED 500,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | 0% p.a. | 0% p.a. |
| Max | 3.5% p.a. | 0.5% p.a. |
| Max + salary transfer | 4.0% p.a. | 1.0% p.a. |
The Classic rate on balances up to AED 500,000 fell from 0.5% to 0% from 1 March 2026.
Liv’s separate 5%–6% salary-transfer offer
Liv is also running a separate salary-transfer offer that should not be mixed with the standard rates above.
Eligible customers can currently receive:
- 5% p.a. with salary of AED 5,000+
- 6% p.a. with salary of AED 10,000+
The rate is calculated on average monthly balances and lasts for six months from account opening. The offer applies to first-time Liv customers and certain existing customers who had not transferred salary to Liv since 1 December 2025.
So the 6% figure is a campaign rate, while Liv’s normal Max + salary Goal Account rate is 4% p.a.
Best for: people who want Liv’s savings and banking products and can avoid the Primary Account or Liv Max monthly fees.
Zand Bank — best for business banking and digital assets
What is Zand Bank?
Zand Bank P.J.S.C. is a standalone UAE bank. The CBUAE register classifies Zand as a national conventional retail bank, although its current product focus is much more business- and institution-led than the personal accounts offered by Wio, Liv or Mashreq NEO.
What does Zand offer?
Zand’s current banking work is centred on areas such as:
- corporate and transaction banking
- business accounts
- payments
- digital-asset custody
- tokenisation and blockchain services
- services for fintech companies
- AED-backed digital-currency infrastructure
For this article, the important point is that Zand is a licensed bank, but it is not currently a like-for-like personal banking choice against Wio, Liv, Mbank, ruya or Mashreq NEO.
Zand and Yuze for SMEs
On 6 January 2026, Zand and Yuze announced that they would provide digital business accounts to eligible UAE SMEs and startups. The banking services are provided by Zand and remain subject to Zand’s eligibility and regulatory requirements.
I would therefore remove Zand from the main personal-bank ranking table or clearly label it as a business option. Keeping it at number six beside Wio Personal and Liv makes the comparison look broader than it actually is.
Best for: SMEs, startups, fintech companies and other businesses looking for digital banking rather than a personal salary or savings account.
Which UAE digital bank should you choose?
| If your priority is... | Strongest fit |
|---|---|
| Best all-round digital bank | Wio |
| Highest ongoing conventional savings rate in this shortlist | Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver |
| No minimum-balance requirement | Mbank or ruya |
| Shariah-compliant digital banking | ruya |
| Emirates NBD ecosystem | Liv |
| SME / digital-economy banking | Zand, Wio Business or Mashreq NEOBiz |
| New bank to watch | Reem Bank |
The right choice depends less on the bank's highest advertised percentage than on whether you can actually meet the conditions every month.
A useful way to compare savings products is:
Net annual benefit = interest or profit earned − account fees − subscription fees − transfer costs − FX costs
Someone keeping AED 5,000 in cash, for example, should not pay for a premium account solely to access a slightly higher rate unless the extra interest comfortably exceeds the subscription cost.
UAE digital bank savings rates compared
| Product | Rate | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver | 6.25% p.a. | AED 10,000+ salary; interest on up to AED 500,000; max two debit transactions/month |
| Wio Salary / qualifying Family Fixed Saving Space | 6.00% p.a. | One-month fixed term + AED 5,000 monthly spend + qualifying plan |
| Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver without salary | 5.00% p.a. | AED 50,000+ monthly average balance; interest on up to AED 500,000 |
| Liv Max Goal + salary | 4.00% p.a. | Max + salary transfer; first AED 500,000 |
| Liv Max Goal | 3.50% p.a. | Max subscription or fee waiver; first AED 500,000 |
| Wio Standard Fixed Saving Space | 3.25% p.a. | Fixed for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months |
| Wio Standard flexible AED Saving Space | 3.00% p.a. | Flexible Saving Space |
Your digital bank can handle everyday spending; StashAway Simple™ can hold the cash you want to keep accessible
A digital bank is useful for salary crediting, card spending, bill payments and transfers. But the highest savings rates often come with conditions: Wio’s 6% p.a. requires a qualifying plan and monthly spend, Mashreq NEO PLUS requires either salary transfer or a minimum balance, while Liv’s higher rates are tied to Max and salary conditions.
For cash you do not need for day-to-day spending but still want to access, StashAway Simple™ offers a projected 3.6% p.a. net of fees without having to move your salary, maintain a minimum balance or meet monthly spending requirements.
Simple™ invests 100% in the Emirates Islamic AED Money Market Fund and has:
- no minimum deposit
- no salary-transfer requirement
- no minimum spending
- no lock-in
- no maximum balance for the projected rate
That makes it useful alongside, rather than instead of, a digital bank: keep your transactional money in the bank account that suits you, while holding excess AED cash in Simple™ if you want a low-risk option without bank account conditions.
The projected 3.6% p.a. rate is net of fees, not guaranteed, and is stated as of 7 January 2026. It can change with the underlying fund’s yield and market conditions.
Can tourists and non-residents open a digital bank account in the UAE?
Most of the digital accounts ranked above are designed around UAE residents and typically require an Emirates ID, UAE mobile number and digital identity checks.
Non-resident access changed materially in April 2026.
The CBUAE, Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security and ADCB launched digital bank-account opening through the Tourist Identity initiative on 30 April 2026.
The service allows non-resident visitors to use a Tourist Identity supported by biometrics and facial recognition to open an ADCB account digitally. The initiative also connects visitors with UAE payment infrastructure including Jaywan and Aani.
This is important, but it is not a blanket rule allowing tourists to open every Wio, Mashreq NEO, Liv, Mbank or ruya product. Check each bank's current residency and KYC requirements.
Are digital banks safe in the UAE?
The first check is regulatory: who holds the banking licence?
Wio, Mbank, ruya, Zand and Reem appear in the CBUAE bank register under their own legal entities. Liv and Mashreq NEO operate under Emirates NBD and Mashreq respectively.
For payment apps and wallets, check the legal entity and licence category rather than assuming a banking app-style interface means the provider is a bank.
What about deposit protection?
The UAE's legal position changed with Federal Decree-Law No. 6 of 2025.
Article 122 of the CBUAE law expressly provides that the CBUAE Board of Directors may issue regulations for a Deposits Guarantee Scheme to protect deposits and depositors' rights.
That means it is no longer accurate to write simply that the UAE has no legal framework for deposit guarantees.
At the same time, the CBUAE materials reviewed for this guide do not set out a simple public coverage amount equivalent to Singapore's fixed SDIC limit or the UK's FSCS limit. Customers with large deposits should therefore check the latest CBUAE rules and their bank's disclosures rather than assume a particular per-depositor guarantee amount.
What Aani has to do with your choice of digital bank
A digital bank has no branch to fall back on when money needs to move quickly, so how well it has built instant transfers into the app matters more here than it does for a traditional bank with counter service.
Aani, the UAE's national instant-payment platform operated by Al Etihad Payments, a CBUAE subsidiary, is the shared rail behind a growing share of that instant-transfer experience, and it is a practical way to judge how digital a bank's back end actually is, not just its interface.
According to the CBUAE's 10 April 2026 update:
- registered users exceeded 12.5 million
- 74 licensed financial institutions were connected
- around 25,000 transfers per day were being made using mobile numbers alone
- approximately 774,000 merchants had adopted Aani
- account-to-account transactions completed in no more than three seconds on average
- the number of transfers grew sixfold year on year
- average monthly growth during 2025 was 10%
Aani supports functions including QR payments, Request to Pay and transfers using a mobile number or Emirates ID instead of a full IBAN. Before opening any of the accounts compared in this guide, check in the app whether Aani is available directly. That tells you more about actual transfer speed than a bank's marketing page usually does.

Aani instant payments in the UAE, at a glance, sourced from the Central Bank of the UAE's 10 April 2026 update
Fees to check before opening a digital bank account
| Fee or condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monthly account fee | Can wipe out the interest earned on a small cash balance |
| Fall-below fee | Can apply when a salary or balance condition is missed |
| Premium subscription | Liv Max and optional premium plans need to earn back their monthly cost |
| Withdrawal restrictions | Some high-yield accounts reduce or forfeit interest after too many withdrawals |
| International transfer fee | Important for UAE customers regularly sending money overseas |
| FX spread / markup | Can cost more than the transfer fee itself |
| Non-network ATM fee | Adds up for customers who use cash regularly |
| Foreign-card transaction fee | Often several percent on overseas spending |
| Early account closure fee | Some providers charge when an account is closed soon after opening |
| Fixed-savings early withdrawal | Can reduce the interest earned on fixed-term products |
Digital bank or traditional bank: which is better?
| Feature | Digital-first bank / brand | Traditional bank |
|---|---|---|
| Account opening | Usually app-first and fast | Increasingly digital as well |
| Branch access | Limited or none | Stronger |
| Savings rates | Often competitive, but conditions vary | Wide range |
| Cash deposits | Depends heavily on ATM/partner network | Usually easier |
| Multicurrency | Strong at some digital banks | Common at larger banks |
| Mortgages and complex lending | More limited at some providers | Usually broader |
| Business banking | Growing quickly | More established |
| Service model | App, chat and call-centre heavy | App plus branch/RM channels |
For many UAE customers, the distinction is now less about whether the bank is "digital" and more about what the account actually costs and what services it lacks.
If you never need a branch, a cheque-related service or a broader borrowing relationship, a digital-first account can be enough. If you need mortgages, business facilities, wealth management or regular in-person support, a traditional bank can still be more practical.
The UAE digital banking market in 2026
The market is still changing quickly.
The CBUAE bank register dated 14 May 2026 lists 63 banks, including the newly licensed Reem Community Bank and Iraqi Islamic Bank for Investment & Development.
At the end of Q1 2026, before those two additions to the register, the CBUAE reported banking-system assets of around AED 5.56 trillion, with strong year-on-year growth in banking assets, credit and deposits.
The more important digital shift is not simply the number of banks. It is the infrastructure being built around them:
- Aani has moved instant transfers toward mobile numbers, Emirates IDs and QR payments.
- The CBUAE Open Finance framework is designed around consent-based financial-data sharing and transaction initiation.
- Tourist Identity has started extending fully digital onboarding beyond UAE residents.
- Reem Bank adds another digital-first/community-bank entrant.
- Banks such as Zand are increasingly supplying regulated infrastructure to fintech and digital-business platforms rather than competing only through a consumer app.
That makes licence structure, interoperability and underlying account economics more useful comparison points than simply asking which bank has the newest app.
FAQs about digital banks in the UAE
What is the best digital bank in the UAE?
For a broad personal-banking proposition, Wio is the strongest all-round option in this comparison because it combines everyday banking, competitive savings, multicurrency support and investing in one digital platform. Mashreq NEO PLUS is stronger if your only priority is the highest ongoing savings rate and you meet its conditions.
Which UAE digital bank pays the highest savings interest rate?
Among the ongoing conventional bank rates compared here, Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver pays 6.25% p.a. for customers transferring at least AED 10,000 of salary. Wio pays up to 6% p.a. on qualifying one-month Fixed Saving Spaces. Liv currently has a separate promotional offer of up to 6% p.a. for six months for eligible salary-transfer customers.
Which digital bank in the UAE has no minimum balance?
Mbank and ruya both prominently offer personal account options without a minimum-balance requirement. Always check the exact account type and current Key Facts Statement because premium tiers and other products can have separate conditions.
Is Wio a real bank in the UAE?
Yes. Wio Bank P.J.S.C. appears on the Central Bank of the UAE's register as a national conventional retail bank.
Is Liv a bank?
Liv is a digital banking brand owned by Emirates NBD. Emirates NBD Bank P.J.S.C. holds the banking licence; Liv is not separately licensed as its own bank.
Is Mashreq NEO a separate bank?
No. Mashreq NEO and NEO PLUS are digital banking products of Mashreq Bank P.S.C.
Is ruya Shariah-compliant?
Yes. ruya is listed by the CBUAE as a national Islamic specialised bank, and its savings proposition is based on Shariah-compliant expected profit rather than conventional interest.
Can I open a UAE digital bank account without transferring salary?
Yes. ruya has no salary requirement on its standard personal accounts. Mbank markets its standard Current and Savings accounts without a minimum salary, although its general legal terms still contain separate Current and Smart Account salary definitions. Mashreq NEO PLUS also offers its 5% p.a. savings route without salary if you maintain at least AED 50,000 monthly average balance.
Can tourists open a UAE bank account digitally?
Yes, in a limited form. ADCB and UAE authorities launched the Tourist Identity digital-account-opening service in April 2026 for non-resident visitors. That does not mean every UAE digital bank accepts tourists.
Is StashAway Simple a digital bank account?
No. StashAway Simple™ is an investment cash management portfolio, not a bank deposit. It invests 100% in the Emirates Islamic AED Money Market Fund and currently projects 3.6% p.a. net of fees, with no salary requirement, minimum deposit or lock-in. The projected return is not guaranteed.
Final verdict: which UAE digital bank is best in 2026?
Wio is the strongest all-round digital bank for customers who want spending, saving, foreign currencies and investing in the same app.
Mashreq NEO PLUS is the strongest choice for pure cash yield if you can meet its AED 10,000 salary-transfer requirement or AED 50,000 balance route and can stay within its withdrawal rules.
ruya is the standout for fully Shariah-compliant digital banking without standard minimum-balance or salary requirements.
Mbank is one of the most accessible choices for zero-balance everyday banking, although customers should check the exact account eligibility presented in-app because its public marketing and general terms currently describe salary eligibility differently.
Liv makes the most sense for customers who value the Emirates NBD ecosystem and can meet its fee-waiver or Max conditions. Its current 5%–6% salary-transfer campaign is attractive, but it is temporary and should not be confused with Liv's ongoing Goal Account rates.
For businesses, Zand belongs in the conversation alongside Wio Business and Mashreq NEOBiz rather than in a retail salary-account ranking. Reem Bank is one to watch once its consumer banking service actually launches.
The best account is ultimately the one whose requirements match how you already bank. Compare the rate you can realistically earn after salary, balance, spending, withdrawal and subscription conditions — not the biggest number in the advertisement.
